If By Whiskey

My friends, I had not intended to discuss this controversial subject at this particular time. However, I want you to know that I do not shun controversy. On the contrary, I will take a stand on any issue at any time, regardless of how fraught with controversy it might be. You have asked me how I feel about whiskey. All right, here is how I feel about whiskey:If when you say whiskey you mean the devil’s brew, the poison scourge, the bloody monster, that defiles innocence, dethrones reason, destroys the home, creates misery and poverty, yea, literally takes the bread from the mouths of little children; if you mean the evil drink that topples the Christian man and woman from the pinnacle of righteous, gracious living into the bottomless pit of degradation, and despair, and shame and helplessness, and hopelessness, then certainly I am against it.

But, if when you say whiskey you mean the oil of conversation, the philosophic wine, the ale that is consumed when good fellows get together, that puts a song in their hearts and laughter on their lips, and the warm glow of contentment in their eyes; if you mean Christmas cheer; if you mean the stimulating drink that puts the spring in the old gentleman’s step on a frosty, crispy morning; if you mean the drink which enables a man to magnify his joy, and his happiness, and to forget, if only for a little while, life’s great tragedies, and heartaches, and sorrows; if you mean that drink, the sale of which pours into our treasuries untold millions of dollars, which are used to provide tender care for our little crippled children, our blind, our deaf, our dumb, our pitiful aged and infirm; to build highways and hospitals and schools, then certainly I am for it.

This is my stand. I will not retreat from it. I will not compromise.

We Will Serve the Lord

We sing a lot of songs in church, and most of them I’ve pretty much had memorized since I first heard them. There’s one though that I didn’t really know completely until just about three years ago. I wasn’t the only one, either. My brother and sister and I all though that it went, “and as for me and IHOP, we will serve the Lord.” Turns out we were wrong. Still, it’s a catchy tune. Good moral values.

As for me and my house…

Hollywood Video

Weekends growing up were often spent watching a movie in the family room, sometimes with the family, sometimes just one or two of them, but always with a movie. These days we go out to see movies at the theatre, but then we used to rent our movies. Maybe my parents hated going out, maybe there are more children’s movies at the store, but each Friday night started with a trip to Hollywood Video.

This weekend, I found that Hollywood Video on the corner or Ray and  Rural has gone out of business. I asked my Mom about it, and she says it’s been out of business for almost a year, with a big “For Lease” sign up and everything. I like to think that I just haven’t been paying attention to things in and around home. I remember the start of each weekend at this store next to the grocery store very fondly. There was a large back wall filled with New Releases, and it usually took me several trips up and down the length of it to find a film. I remember the SciFi section that had all my favorite Star Trek videos, and that the Horror section, which I wasn’t allowed to select from, was next to it. They had candy and popcorn at the checkout, which I, of course, begged for each time. On occasion, I was allowed to pick on for myself, and one and two for my brother and sister.

I’ve since become an advocate against stores like this and their ridiculous late-fees. And I’ve been happy customer of Netflix for some five years. But I miss this store and its shelves full of films. I miss the start of each weekend and of family night spent there. I miss the kid who used to prowl the shelves, much to his parents annoyance, for hours.

Wir Werden Sehen

Feuer ist mein Haar
Deine Hand ist Kerosin
Die Atmosphäre glüht
Hey Mann lass uns gehn
Ich zeig Dir wie ich tanz
Und Deine Augen spür´n Musik
Kuck mich nicht so an Mann
Komm lass uns geh´n

Junge was kommt dann

Feuer das bin ich
Du bist super und Benzin
Wenn wir zusammen brennen
Wird der Ofen nie mehr ausgeh´n
Tank mal voll
Die Karre will jetzt endlich los ah

Will keine Feuerwehr
